Courageous Explorers is a term I use to describe people who are boldly navigating life, including its many twists and turns, as well as its ups and downs. Courageous Explorers are actively creating a life for themselves, but that life feels empty, unfulfilling, resulting in feeling lost, discouraged, disconnected from their values, and their true selves. Are you a Courageous Explorer? If so, which type are you?
Type 1: You sometimes feel like there's a memo or a formula that tells people how to live a good life and achieve happiness but you didn't get the memo? Are you constantly comparing yourself to your peers and feel that you’re coming up short? Do you live in fear that others will discover your perceived shortcomings? Are you struggling to course correct, but have no idea how to navigate this thing call life?
Type 2: You’ve definitely received the memo and you've done everything that you were expected to do:
Graduated from school
Got a respectable 9-5
Moved out into your own apartment
Bought a car
Earned money and achieved financial stability
Found a partner, got married, and had 2.4 kids
Despite having achieved all the goals outlined in your memo, you feel unfulfilled. It leaves you wondering if you’re missing page 2 of the memo? You spend considerable time awake at night wondering, now what? Despite having what seems to be the perfect life, you feel stuck and you’re not sure how to course correct. Need help navigating your way out of feeling lost and unfulfilled?
Courageous Exploring is not in the DSM 5, it’s an expression used to describe someone who wants to embark on a journey of self-discovery. If you feel like you don’t really know who you are, what you value, what stimulates you, or what brings you joy, then consider becoming a courageous explorer.
While many embark on the journey to simply get to know themselves better, others do so with the aim of fixing a problem or as a form of course correction.
If you find yourself always comparing yourself to others, regretting choices you’ve made, saying if only life gave do-overs, or maybe you just feel absolutely lost about where to go from here or what to do next, then it sounds like you’re an explorer. The only question left to be asked is are you courageous?
Whatever the reason motivating your journey of self-discovery, I’d be honoured to be your guide.
What bothers you the most? What keeps you stuck?
I believe transparency in the treatment process directly contributes to positive treatment outcomes. As such, you can expect me to demystify the the therapeutic process. This means psychoeducation and bibliotherapy are embedded in every treatment plan.
I am trained in multiple modalities, therefore you can anticipate that we will approach healing in more than one way. In the process, we will discover which approach(s) best suits your personality and clinical needs. As a trauma specialist, I know "the body keeps the score", therefore I promote a holistic approach to healing; this means addressing the mind, body, and soul. The treatment process is collaborative, so you will always have choice about how (fast, slow, etc.) we proceed, so speak up - I'm listening.
In general, you can expect me to help you to:
Introspection is not easy. It's a process that takes time time, hard work, sweat, and yes - tears. It’s gruelling work to unpack years of history. It's challenging (with lots of homework), but I think you will find the results are worth it. And remember, though you're doing the heavy lifting, I'll be there to spot you.
